  • Dummy Dog and Bikes!

Here is Skipper this morning!  When he spat the dummy Jessica said, "You are a dummy, dog!"

After being away for six months the girls (and me) are enjoying having bikes again!

Jasmine and Jessica having a race!

    Me on Jasmine's bike!

Sorry none of Chantel on her bike today - she fell of her scooter this morning while she was racing with Jessica and grazed both knees!  I think we need to get some knee pads!

  • part 3 and a new addition

Ok, so we stayed a few days in Longreach before heading off again.  It seems like not much exciting happened on this leg either!  We stopped the night at Llyod Jones Weir another free camp spot.  There was lots of trees so we took care not to park under any red gums that are notorious for dropping branches with no notice given.

Suzanna playing with some dry gum leaves outside our camp.

The next day the oldest three girls went for a 1.4k run!  We were following in the car, it was a dirt road with little to no traffic so they were very safe.  Gabrielle ran for a bit too!  After a visit to the local town (Blackall) the girls ran back home down the same safe dirt road!  That's almost 3k's running!!  They all had sore leg muscles the next day!!!  Just before Blackall we passed a small "town" where there was a display of old farm equipment, tractors etc.  It was awesome and free too!

Next day we did a long stint and spent the night at a caravan park in Augathella!  Oh the bliss of hot showers, power and lights!!!  Didn't get to take photo's of this place, it was worth the almost $50 we paid for the night.

Set off again about mid morning following more long straight roads!  We stopped at a little playground for lunch.

    Another LONG straight road!

Cactus trees were very common along the roadside.

Our next stop was Wallumbilla where we stayed at the showgrounds with free power and hot showers!!!  A great spot to camp.  We stayed here about 5 nights.  This place was walking distance to the country store, post office and playground.

The nights out here were really cold - but the days were lovely.  We even had a couple of frosts!!  They weren't real frosts by New Zealand standards - it was all gone by 8am!

We drove back to Roma to do our shopping and came across these trees - what the girls call the "pregnant trees"!

Anyone know what they really are?

The big news is that while we were in Wallumbilla we spied a puppy to give away - so we got him!

He is a Kelpie X Red Heeler and is adorable!  The girls love him.  For the first few times in the car he whined till he fell asleep!  He's okay now!

Next stop was an overnighter at a truck stop!  The girls managed to find a pile of tar covered stones and had no  idea how dirty the back of their pants were after sliding down the pile!

Chantel and Chana returning to the caravan at Darr Creek truck stop.  Next door was a small country store and gas station.

Next morning we up and left for GYMPIE!  The girls were so excited, especially the littler ones!  They couldn't wait to get back to there stuff!  It was fun to start recognizing some landmarks as we got closer to "home".

We are now camping at the showgounds in Gympie and wake every morning (except Sunday) to the sound of galloping hooves!  We are about 10 meters from the race track!

The girls have now been reunited with their bikes and scooters which are getting a lot of use!

Skipper has settled in well and is enjoying being in one place for a while!  The girls are training him and he's responding well so far.  The law here says a dog must always be on lead - note the attached lead (with blue handle)!!  He loves the race track and has fun chasing the girls up and down the track!

Here endeth the saga of our travels so far.  Not sure where to from here but will let you know when we know!

  • Part 2

After leaving Prairie,  we traveled on to Hughenden - the heart of dinosaur country.  We visited the dinosaur museum and were disappointed that there was no creation side of the story.  "500 million years ago there was nothing!  X million years later (nothing) exploded!!"  Well even my 5 year old knows that if you have nothing to begin with then it can't explode!  I guess if people keep hearing this lie often enough they will believe it - sad to say. For those of you reading here and don't know the first verse of the Bible, it says, "In the beginning GOD created the heavens and the earth."  So how many beginnings are there?

OK, back to our travels .... after the museum we stopped at the playground for another bite to eat and saw the most adorable puppies.  Unfortunately they were bull mastif x bull arab so would be way to big for us!

We then drove down a developmental road (that is a road that is not a main road, but it was sealed) to Corfield.  It was amazing to see the flat, wide open space with Spinifex grass as far as the eye could see.

The long straight road leading from Hughenden to Winton

Corfield consisted of a pub (that was sometimes open), a well maintained tennis court, public toilets and a free camp spot with trampoline, swings and slide.  We loved Corfield with it's just miles and miles of nothingness!!

Campsite (and no-one used the toilet to the right of the picture!)

    The view from the door!

Next morning the girls enjoyed playing on the tramp and the swings and we even had a game of tennis as there were rackets and balls there for anyone to use.  As we were packing down we saw a microlight fly over, then it turn around and landed on road and taxied to a stop outside the pub!!  Didn't get a photo unfortunately.

Not much interesting on the road today.  We stopped the night at Crawford Creek.  It was cool and overcast and we missed the brilliant stars!  There we no flood lights or lights in the toilets so it was very dark!  We heard a little rain in the night but it didn't sound to much.

We woke to more light rain and Jasmine (who'd been out to the toilets first) asking for something to clean her feet off with!  She muttered something about mud so she got a wet wipe and cleaned herself up - she'd gone out in her usual bare feet!  Next up, was me (Sarah) I used my jandals and stepped out into the MUD!   We noticed that most of the other campers had gone and it was only 7.15am!  All that was left was three campervans and us!  And there we stayed all day!!!!!  Stuck in the caravan all day!!!!!!  Two of the campervans tried to get out and got bogged!  One in the entrance and one blocking our exit!  A passing 4WD stopped and winched the one in the entrance out.

We spent the day piggy backing one or another of the little ones to the toilets through the squelchy squelchy mud!  So glad we had our gumboots!!  The girls did so well stuck together in such a confined space all day!

Next day dawned fine and clear - yay for the sun!!!!  The first motorhome easily got out of the mud around mid morning, with the next one slipping and slithering out soon after.  When we tried we couldn't even get started!!!  The problem --- a rock under the back wheel!!!  Some other drivers gave us a push over the rock and we just flew out with no further ado!

Packing up in the mud!  Note the bog in front of the door - and Mike's gumboots!!

The road from here was a kangaroo graveyard - we've never seen so much road kill!

We drove to Longreach Water Hole where we discovered had been a lot wetter here!  Nice big camping area but lots of campers too due to the now canceled-due-to-rain Statewide Rodeo.  We stayed in Longreach for three nights.

We visited the Stockman's Hall of Fame which traced the history of early Australia and included a demonstration of rounding up sheep with dogs and horse!  This was the girls favourite part!  They got to pat all the animal's (excluding the sheep) and Suzanna even kissed the horse!  Next day we caught up with laundry and the local laundromat.

Need to go now and organize food for our hungry brood!  Will have to do a part 3 later!

  • Power, hot showers and stuff!

Never thought I'd appreciate a hot shower until I went without one for .... um .... a week!  And lights - ever tried cooking dinner in the dark, with just some little battery lights?  Oh and a heater!!!  The weather turned really cold (for Aussie) about two days into our trip.  We had frosts on several occasions - brrrrr!  It was really cold for us after Townsville where the night temps were around 15-20*C.  Now we have our heater and I'm not exaggerating when I say it goes ALL nights - as in the thermostat does not switch it off!  (I'm sure glad that power is included in the camping fee!)

So where are we and where have we been?

We left Townsville on Saturday 19 July and made it to a free camp spot at Reid River.  A lovely quiet spot, clean amenities and flood lights.

Here is some of the girls at Reid River - they were digging for treasure!

Next day we went on to Charters Towers - a lovely country town!  Would have liked to spend more time exploring.  We had lunch at the playground which the kids loved.  Suzanna especially enjoyed crawling at top speed though the sand.

This was the last day that Gabrielle went without a shirt!!

And we saw our first Road Trains!  These trucks are up to 50m long!!!

Our next camp spot, Campase River was recommend to us as a clean and quiet site!  *snort*  I'm not sure what was noisier, the trains on the one side or the road trains on the other side!!!  And the train even gave a long loud tooooot as it shot past at 9.30pm - poor Suzanna woke up with her eyes as wide as saucers!!!

The next morning we were greeted by a flock of Apostle birds!  They were really tame and the girls enjoyed feeding them.

We drove on down a very long straight road to a very tiny "town" (more like a village) called Prairie so named because of it reminded the early settlers of the American prairies.  This was Jasmines favourite spot - she'd love to live here!

This was about all there was there!  Across the road was this sign ...

never knew one road could lead to so many places - and places that we couldn't even pronounce!

That is the end of part one ... I'm out of time!  Will try and get this finished another day!

  • Going off the grid again

We are heading off tomorrow (or the next day if we are not organized enough!).  We've had some stuff come up in Gympie that we have to deal with.  We are not sure what route we will take but we plan to have some fun on the way.  Pray for some fine weather for us please!

Until we get back on the grid have a great time!

    Hey readers!

I see lots of footprints round my blog but no comments   Ya don't have to sign in to comment now.  It feels funny talking to myself - I hope I don't start answering myself on here.  Hehe!!

So Mike was supposed to have his last week of work this week - but Monday was an RDO (routine day off), Tuesday he went to work but was sent home , today it was wet and he hasn't heard about tomorrow yet and it's 7.30pm so it's not likely he'll have work tomorrow either.  Who knows if he'll get work Friday !  Oh well it's a taste of things to come I guess.

    And Chantel wants to send

    Chana is sending this
